Temporary Museum Shop Manager Part Time (central London EC1)


£14 per hour


Core hours Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 11-4pm. Additional hours may be available if there are events in the local area. Immediate start.


This role will be based in a temporary pop up museum and shop in EC1 which will open approximately 3 days per week during November and December 2023. 

Pollock’s Toy Museum Trust was founded in 1969 as a Registered Charity (No.313622) associated with Pollock’s Toy Theatres Ltd The trust owns the majority of the collection and cares for a number of additional loaned items.

We are in the process of finding a new permanent home in London for the collection with the intention of increasing and improving access to all audiences. In the meantime we are arranging pop up events, fundraising and working to enable a secure future for the museum. The majority of the collection is currently in storage, and being run entirely by trustees and volunteers. 


The Shop Manager is responsible for the daily operations of the shop and encouraging donations to support the pop up museum. The primary duties are facilitating customer service and ensuring that the shop is efficiently and profitably run. The museum and shop will also be supported by volunteers. The role reports to the Trustees. 



  • Managing and overseeing shop operations, developing a routine for opening and closing, ensuring efficient functioning of the shop, managing the sales floor and providing maximum profitability. 

  • Working with the trustees to ensure there is sufficient stock, identifying opportunities to improve sales

  • Delivering exceptional customer service, training volunteers to do the same where necessary

  • Working with trustees to establish and implement security, emergency and health and safety measures

  • Managing loss prevention by following security requirements, auditing sales and paperwork and appropriately handling broken or damaged merchandise

  • Helping with the online store if necessary


The building is listed and stock is stored, together with staffroom facilities in a room that can only be accessed via a narrow spiral staircase. The role is 100% based in the shop and museum in EC1. 


Experience requirements

  • 2-3 years retail experience in a similar role

  • A knowledge or interest in toys, toy theatres or museum shops would be useful

  • A friendly, outgoing manner, and enjoyment of welcoming customers, and talking to visitors about the museum is essential.
