The Corsican Brothers is based on a novel by Alexandre Dumas the elder (1844). It was adapted for the stage by Dion Boucicault in 1852, and the script was published for the toy theatre by
J. K. Green in 1854, a rare case, by this date, of a new play being adapted in this way.
Set partly in a Corsica plagued by vendetta, and partly in louche Parisian society, the drama is full of spectacle, from a ball at the Paris Opera to a duel in the snow-covered Forest of Fontainebleau. This made the play a raging success in Paris and in London, where numerous theatres vied with each other to present productions. A novel form of stage trap enabled Louis’ ghost to glide forwards and upwards through the stage, and the “ghost melody” (specially written for the French production) was soon played on every parlour piano.
